Blindingly white beaches surrounded by turquoise waves. Cosy bungalows built on stilts above the water. Lush rainforests bursting with life. Scenes like these are usually only seen on the covers of glossy travel magazines, but in Malaysia they're everywhere you look. Without a doubt, this is what paradise is made of.

The two main islands of Malaysia include some of the most pristine natural beauty in South-East Asia. Thousands of sandy beaches dot the shoreline, and countless tropical islands just off shore add exponentially to the sea-and-sand offerings. Inland, the dense Malaysian forest, which covers more than three quarters of the country, dominates. It's interrupted only by towns and cities, like Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital. The warm, humid climate here means you can enjoy the country's attractions year-round, though beware that it's bound to be a hot and sticky experience.

Separated from Indonesia by the narrow Straits of Melaka, Malaysia has a vibrant culture that mixes indigenous, Chinese and Indian customs. This mix is best seen in cities like Kuala Lumpur, where Chinese restaurants, Indian shops and Malay architecture stand side-by-side. The capital is a vibrant place with a hectic pace, and it's very prosperous. One of its best-known attractions is the Petrona Towers, the tallest buildings in the world. The towers have helped give Malaysia its reputation as one of the most advanced and westernized countries in this part of Asia.

To see the real Malaysia, you'll need to venture past its capital. The country's endless natural spaces are a wonderland for lovers of the outdoors. You can hike for miles under the lush green canopy of the Malaysian forest, or bike along well-marked trails in the flatlands. The scuba diving in parts of Malaysia is excellent, and the more adventurous can try spelunking in the countless caves here. Animal lovers should head to one of the many natural parks and nature reserves here, where it's possible to see exotic birds and animals in the wild. Some of the best-known natural spaces are the Cameron Highlands and Frasier's Hill.
