The Caribbean island of Barbados is renowned not only for it's beautiful coral reefs and crystal clear waters that are perfect for snorkelling and diving, but also it's warm hospitality. A blend of familiarity with the exotic, combined with a tropical climate makes Barbados a popular choice for holidaymakers who are looking for excellent tourism services, watersports and a good night out.
The island's capital city is Bridgetown, a commercial port with a small number of things to see. On the historical front, check out the Barbados Garrison, a 17th century British base with a museum and other military attractions, while the Barbados museum offers an insight into the island's past.
For simple recreation, soak up the sun on the lawns of Queen's park. Barbados has numerous lovely beaches many of which have excellent conditions for windsurfing, surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving. The east coast however can be dangerous with rocky shelves and strong currents. The best time for windsurfing is from November to June at Maxwell and Silver Sands, while surfing is best at the Soup Bowl, South Point and Rockley Beach. The island is has good walking conditions and it also possible to hire horses at Mullins Bay.
The Grantley Adams International Airport is 16km from Bridgetown. There are taxis and buses to the city. Note that if you wish to use a hire car, a temporary driving permit is required.
The most popular tourist season is February to May, when the climate is cooler and drier.
