Located within a small hamlet on the site of the first water powered mill in the Colne Valley, it is south facing within the sheltered, wooded valley, Merrydale, and at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac. This is an ancient, cobbled pack horse road and, apart from the sound of falling water, the property is quiet and rural. Merrydale is a beauty spot, designated as a Site of Scientific Interest, and its abundant bird life includes dippers, kingfishers, herons and sparrow hawks. Foxes are often seen and a deer was recently sighted. Nearby are the Pennine Way, Marsden Moors (National Trust) and Standedge Tunnel. The television series" Where The Heart is" is set in the nearby village.
