Round about is Oporto, the streets full of cafes, restaurants to suit all budgets and the chance to take a boat or helicopter trip are right there. Ribeira 300 metres to the left boasts some fine buildings, museums and churches and the best market in Northern Portugal, open from 5am.
Take the Eiffel designed bridge across the Douro to Gaia (10 minutes walk) and visit the Port Houses os Ferreira, Sandemans and Barros amongst others where you can take a guided trip and sample the delights of Portugals oldest export. Take a day trip up the river inland and see a country that hasn't changed that much for nundreds of years - trips leave ca 8am and return in the evening with lunch provided.
Gaia also boasts a fantastic beach, perfect for swimming, bathing or water sports and just a bit further down the coast there's one of several golf courses available for a daily rate to non-members.
From here you can head north to Spain and the green north of Portugal, Minho.
This is a break for those who love fine food and wine, monuments, water sports and beach fun, art and culture.

Luis showed us around the apartment and discovered that the cooker oven still had remnants of several pizzas. This for us was the big disappointment of the place, it had not been made ready or made clean for incoming visitors. It seemed to us as though it had been given a cursory and quick making of bed and no more. The bath was grimey and the top of the cooker, work tops and table tops hadn't been cleaned. There were cobwebs around the bedroom.
This put a bit of a dampner on our first couple of days in Porto. I telephoned Luis to let him know how we felt and he apologised and expressed his own disappointment for how the apartment had been left.
The apartment is in an excellent location, close to everything the visitor to Porto would need. There is plenty of information for visitors about Porto left in the flat to peruse.
