Elgin which is only a ten minute drive provides the main shopping in Moray, although the town of Rothes has all basic needs shops as well as a post office and bank, hotels, takeaways etc. Elgin boasts many interesting monuments including the ruins of the Cathedral, the Duke of Gordon statue, the Market Cross and Spynie Palace. The large leisure centre offers ice skating, swimming, saunas and a fitness suite. There is also a ten pin bowling alley, a go-kart racetrack, tennis courts, and the beautiful Cooper Park - a haven for young and old - which has a small boating lake, cricket pitch, library, lovely walks along the riversides and not forgetting the acclaimed Biblical Gardens.

There are many famous factory tours including Baxters of Speyside - the soup and jam manufacturer, Johnstons of Elgin - Cashmere producer, and Walkers of Aberlour - famed worldwide for its shortbread. At Lossiemouth there are dolphin and whale watch boat trips and within a mile of the cottage is a very popular trout fishery offering daily tariffs for beginners as well as experienced fly fishers. There are tasting sessions at most of the Malt Whisky Distilleries which are littered throughout Moray.

Further afield the highland capital of Inverness is roughly 50 minutes, and the ski centre at Aviemore is about 45 minutes.
