One of the Balearic islands, Ibiza sits just 90km off the coast of Spain and is a small island less than 50km long. The island is famous for its club scene and late nights, but there are still countless quiet corners to discover. White-walled towns, (once strictly the domain of poets, artists and bohemians) dot the coast and the interior. The shore is sprinkled with small coves and hidden beaches. Of course, those looking for more action will find it in the island's towns, which are filled with stylish shops, restaurants and bars.

Ibiza City, the island's capital, makes a great base for exploring the island. By day shop in the centre or explore the old walled town, which was founded by the Romans. By night head to Sa Penya, the portside neighbourhood that's known for the wild and weird crowd it attracts. Drag queens, people in costume and exhibitionists and strut their stuff along the streets, making a fun spectacle for the people watchers who fill the terrace bars here. Afterwards, head to world-famous clubs like El Divino and Pach? to dance until dawn.

The town of San Antonio (dubbed 'San An') is another great spot for nightlife. A string of seaside bars are lined up along the northern shore, creating one of the most atmospheric places in Spain for drinks and dancing.

After a long night out in Ibiza City or San Antonio, nothing beats a day spent lounging on the beach, and with more than 200km of coastline Ibiza offers beaches for all tastes and styles. The long Playa d'en Bossa, near Ibiza City, is one of the island's most popular beaches. Soft white sand, clean waters and an abundance of lively beach bars make this a fun place to be. On breezy days it's popular with windsurfers. San An beaches include Cala Graci?, a small rocky beach, and farther north Cala Salada, a wide beach that backs up to a pine forest. For something a little quieter, head to Cala Conta in the west, two small beaches that offer amazing views and safe swimming.

Ibiza's mild weather means any time is a good time to visit. Beach weather begins in late May, with a long, warm summer lasting through October and drawing sunbathers, water sports fans and party animals in droves. The less-crowded autumn and Spring months are ideal times to get away from the crowds, as the weather is pleasantly warm most days. Winters are damp and often surprisingly chilly, but the sun still shines in abundance.

Direct flights from throughout the UK and Europe arrive daily in Ibiza; the trip from London takes just over two hours. You can also catch a high-speed ferry to Ibiza from the Spanish mainland. Once on the island, renting a car is the best way to find hidden coves, quiet beaches and the quaint towns of the interior, though there is a reliable (but crowded) island bus system.

With beaches being Ibiza's main draw, it's no surprise that there's an endless variety of water sports to choose from. Rent sailboats or windsurfing equipment, try waterskiing, or have a run on a jet ski. Divers will be thrilled with the offerings here; diving companies are scattered around the island and offer spectacular scuba diving at all levels. The clear, warm waters here make diving especially enjoyable.

On dry land, head to the island's single golf course in Roca Llisa or try horseback riding along the coast with one of the numerous equestrian outfitters. Tennis is also popular. Mountain biking is a great way to enjoy the island scenery, though do be cautious as the narrow, winding roads can make it hard to see oncoming traffic.

Walkers will find the numerous trails well-marked and easy to follow, but in summer hiking can be challenging as the sun is merciless and shade is hard to come by! Always take water and plenty of sunscreen.
