A tiny village home to just about 2,000 people, Gauc?n seems to be the town time forgot. With white-walled houses stacked like blocks on the steep slopes surrounding the town centre, this is classic Andaluc?a. Sidewalks cafes, sun-drenched plazas and a penchant for late-night guitar music complete the too-good-to-be-true picture.

One of the main attractions of the town is simply wandering its pretty, flower-filled streets and admiring the views. On clear days, you can see the Mediterranean, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the Rif Mountains all the way across the strait in North Africa.

In town, visit the ruins of the Castillo de Aguila (Eagle Castle), where eagles are often seen flying. The castle was built by the Romans and was later strengthened by the Arabs. It's open daily for visits and occasional concerts are held here.

Surrounding Gauc?n are pine forests full of birds and small wildlife. Walking here is a joy, especially in the mild Spring and Autumn months. Meander around the olive groves and among the wildflowers that burst into life in Spring.

Southern Spain is more than mild. Shorts and short-sleeves can be worn from March through October, and winter is short and sweet. Spring and fall are the best times to come; the weather is comfortable and the days fairly long. Most Spaniards avoid this region in July and August, when the heat can be simply unbearable at mid-day. If you're in Andaluc?a in summer, you'll immediately understand why the siesta is such a success here.

The large M?laga airport is less than an hour's drive from Gauc?n. There are regular, direct flights from the UK and travel time is about two hours.

In Gauc?n itself, plan to walk most everywhere, though to explore beyond the town centre you'll need your own transport. There are also good buses connecting the town to other major towns and cities in the region.

Walking is the most popular activity here, and a myriad of trails twist and turn in the forests surrounding Gauc?n. The area is especially popular with bird watchers, as the town is on the migration route for many species. Guided tours are available.

Horseback riders can head to the two riding stables here, and those looking for some fun in the sun can hit the local pool. There are also tennis courts in town.

Those with their own cars will want to visit the Costa del Sol, which is just a half-hour away. The popular beaches there are full of companies offering boating, water skiing, jet skiing and other watery pursuits.
