Fuertaventura, Canary Islands

Fuertaventure Apartments: One of the easternmost islands in the Canary Island archipelago, Fuerteventura is a beach-lover's paradise, with more than 150 white, fine-sand beaches dotted around its leaf-shaped coastline. Like the rest of the Canaries, Fuerteventura is volcanic in origin, though the last eruption here happened some 7,000 years ago. A few volcanic rock formations survive, but today you'll see a mostly flat, mostly sand-filled landscape that is far more desert-like than mountainous.

Large-scale tourist development has yet to make a direct hit on Fuerteventura, so (for the time being) the island has been able to preserve its 'away from it all' feel. The surfing enthusiasts who descend year-round on the beaches here give the island a bohemian charm you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere, though the relaxed vibe attracts travelers of all styles and persuasions.

The island's capital and main point of entry is Puerto de Rosario, on the east coast. This is the only real city, and about half of the island population lives here. Most of the other towns are devoted to tourism. Some of the best for making an island base are Morro Jable, home to a 20km-long beach; Corralejo, a great surfing destination; and Pájara, a pretty inland town.

Fuerteventura's 3,000 hours of sunlight a year are a near guarantee of fine weather no matter when you come. As the Canary island closest to Africa, Lanzarote has the driest and sunniest climate of the archipelago, with temperatures year-round hovering between 25ºC and 30ºC. The seasons here are not well defined, but the winter months see a few degrees' drop in temperature and a slight increase in rainfall.

Fuerteventura's sole airport is just outside the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and flights are constantly coming and going between the island and nearby Gran Canaria. All of these inter-island flights are operated by the local carrier Binter Canarias, though many international airlines make the trip to Gran Canaria from mainland Europe (a four-hour flight from London). You may also find a charter flight from the UK straight to Fuerteventura. If you'd rather take the slow, scenic route, hop on one of the ferries that link Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

Once on the island, having a car will be almost essential if you plan to explore the coast or the interior. Car hire is relatively inexpensive (expect to pay €25/day and up) and will give you the freedom to fully enjoy the island. Public transportation is available, but it's scarce; the local bus company offers just 13 routes across the island.

It shouldn't be surprising that most activities here are beach- or water-related. Beach bumming is without a doubt the most popular activity, with surfing a close second. The rough waves and windy shores have also made the island a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing (a new sport where you glide along the waves pulled by a parachute-like kite). Some of the best spots for any of these surf-style sports are Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Morro Jable, which often hosts part of the Windsurfing World Cup. Scuba diving is also popular and is widely available at most of the larger resorts. Deep sea fishing is an option too, though you'll have to pay dearly for a boat operator to take you out.

On dry land you could try hiking along the coast or in the interior in places like the Parque Natural de Betancuria, a pretty, mountainous area. On the island you'll find companies that lead other hikes around the island.
