Read our mini guide to Limousin
Limousin is a historic province of central France in the northwestern part of the Massif Central. Rich pastures are used for raising Limousin beef cattle, one of the leading breeds of Europe. Waterfalls, springs and fountains, rivers and streams, flow into the Loire or south into the Garonne, irrigating the green fields and flowing through woodland and gorges. The region is well-known for the high-quality of its water and for its top class fishing.
Limoges is the only city of any size in the region. There are few large towns but the countryside is dotted with charming, authentic little villages. Many contemporary applications of traditional decorative arts, crafts and industries are still thriving, among them weaving, haute couture, pottery and goldsmithing.
The region's name is derived from the Lemovices, a Gallic tribe native to the area during the pre-Roman and Roman period.

Although summer temperatures often exceed 32 ?C – and have even reached 40 ?C – the Limousin region has a damper and milder climate than its neighbours.

International airport at Limoges – airlines include Ryan air, Flybe and Air France. Served by the A20 autoroute.
