Most visitors to Warsaw make a beeline for the beautiful Old Town. Although many of the original buildings here were destroyed in World War II, Warsaw's treasures have now been restored to their original glory, and strolling through the streets of the Old Town is a joy. Here you'll find countless shops, bars and restaurants as well as some of Warsaw's most important sights, like the Royal Castle, where Polish royalty lived in the 17th and 18th centuries. The castle gardens are lovely as well.
Other important attractions in Warsaw include its parks, like the peaceful Lazienki Park, and important museums like the National Museum, the Chopin Museum, and the Pawiak Museum.
Don't miss the "Royal Route", a grand avenue stretching from Castle Square to the end of Krakowskie Przedmiescie and Nowy Swiat. The ornate NeoClassical churches and palaces lining the route make one of Warsaw's best-known sights. Monuments to look for include the Warsaw University, Potocki Palace, and the Nicholas Copernicus monument.
Market SquareWarsaw has a cool climate, with average summer temperatures around 20ºC and an average winter temperature that dips to -3ºC. Winters are cold (come prepared!) but beautiful, as snow blankets the city most days. Expect slightly increased rainfall from May through August.
Warsaw's monthly average high and low temperatures are: Jan -1ºC/-6ºC, Feb 1ºC/-5ºC, Mar 6ºC/-2ºC, Apr 13ºC/3ºC, May 18ºC/8ºC, Jun 22ºC/11ºC, Jul 23ºC/12ºC, Aug 23ºC/12ºC, Sep 18ºC/8ºC, Oct 12ºC/4ºC, Nov 6ºC/1ºC, Dec 1ºC/-4ºC
Market SquareThe Warsaw-Okecie im. Fryderyka Chopina International Airport (WAW) is 10km south of central Warsaw and is one of the most important airports of central Europe. There are daily direct flights here from the UK and most other major destinations of Europe. Flight time from London is about 2 hours and 30 minutes. From the airport there is a bus service that leaves regularly from terminal 1 and stops at major city hotels and at the train station.
Warsaw's train station has regular links with Moscow, Berlin, Gdansk and Ostrava. Train travel is an increasingly reliable, although often crowded, way to make your journeys through Poland.
Once in Warsaw, plan on walking through the Old Town and using either the metro system or taxis to get around the city. It's usually a good idea to have your restaurant call for a taxi instead of hailing it on the street.
Market SquareIf you're aching for a taste of the great outdoors, head to the grand Kampinoski Park, which lies just northwest of Warsaw, for great walking trails and the chance to see some native wildlife. Other good parks in Warsaw include the Lazienki Park, where you can go boating on a small lake.
In winter, you can head to the Szczesliwicki Park for downhill skiing near Warsaw. Don't expect big thrills however; there's just one 230-metre-long slope.
