Dubbed "La Gentile" because of its mild, gentle climate, Sorrento is one of Italy's best-loved resort areas. Perched atop a 50-metre sea cliff, surrounded by hills dotted with citrus trees, and bordered by a long, golden beach, Sorrento has been a summer spot since the Roman days. An apartment in Sorrento is ideal for those looking for beautiful beaches, a laid-back resort feel, and easy access to Naples, Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

In Sorrento, the beach and sea views may be the main attraction, but don't neglect the town itself. The cathedral, in the main piazza, is worth a visit, as is the town's 13th-century Franciscan church, noted for its cloister. If you're in the mood for shopping take a stroll along the Via S. Cesario, where you'll find some of Sorrento's best shops.

Sorrento was founded by the Greeks, and according to Homer's Ulysses, this was the home of the tempting Sirens, who sang from Sorrento's cliffs and lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks below.
