Porto Colom, Majorca

Porto Colom, a fishing harbour on the east coast of Mallorca and one of several places in the world claiming to be the birth place of Christopher Columbus has a number of very good beaches nearby. The main beach of Cala Marcal is a blue flag beach about 500m (10 minutes walk) from the centre of town. The beach slopes gently into the sea making it ideal for children and during the summer it's cleaned every morning and has a lifeguard on duty. Locals wanting to sunbathe often prefer to use the less crowded pair of beaches in Porto Colom itself. Sea taxis are available to take you to Cala d'Or and Cala Figuera.

At the northern end of the bay there is a lighthouse and the original unspoilt fishing port with its brightly coloured fishermen's cottages and traditional fishing boats. At the south end of the bay there is a modern marina.

Around the harbour area there is a fair selection of shops, with more souvenir shops behind the beach at Cala Marcal, where most of the tourist development has taken place.
