The city of Torrevieja, which means old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), lies between Alicante in the north and Cartagena in the south, on the Costa Blanca.

Torrevieja is an expanding city with residents from all over the world and a huge community of English and German residents. The area is also patronised by the Spanish who flock here for their summer holidays. With an average of 320 days sunshine each year and an average annual temperature of 20?C the climate is said to be good for sufferers of arthritis, asthma and rheumatism.
The area around of Torrevieja and Orihuela is noted for its large natural saltwater lagoons. The surrounding countryside also has an abundance of orange and lemon groves.

Torrevieja is situated approximately one hours drive South from Benidorm and 40 minutes from Alicante airport. Torrevieja is reached via the wonderful coast road, the N 332.

Noted for their fine sand and crystal clear waters the beaches of Torrevieja - La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura, El Acequi?n and Los N?ufragos all boast the coveted Blue Flag. The seaside promenades are popular and s and the fishing port is home to 300 fishing boats and over 900 leisure craft. One of the greatest attractions of Torrevieja is the variety of entertainment for young people. There are more than a hundred bars, concentrated in El Baluarte area in the La Punta district. Every Friday Torrevieja holds one of the largest open-air markets in Spain and a daily indoor market where you can buy fresh produce. There is also an aquatic park (Aqu?polis) or you could take a trip on a Tabardo catamaran from which you can observe the sea bed or an excursions to the island of Tabarca or various ports along the Costa Blanca. The three closest golf courses are Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor Also popular are sailing, windsurfing, diving, tennis, biking, hiking and riding.
