Regional Image of

Agrigento the province on the south-western coast of Sicily has a coastline that varies from wide sandy beaches, to tiny remote beaches and rocky cliffs. The two major cities are Agrigento and Sciacca. This part of Sicily is best visited during April, May and early June.

Located on a plateau overlooking Sicily's southern coast, Agrigento has a certain charm. Highlights in the city centre are the fourteenth century Romanesque Gothic cathedral and the thirteenth-century Church of San Nicola. The Greek Valley of the Temples are located outside the city proper surrounded by olive groves

and almond orchards.

Sciacca is dominated by Mount San Calogero and remains untouched by mass tourism.

The town centre architecture is steeped in history with Moorish whitewashed buildings. The ancient alleys, some of which are only one person wide and squares are dotted with restaurants serving delicious seafood.

Also worth a visit are the natural steam vents of San Calogero, 7 km away from the town centre. The vapours are said to cure rheumatism, skin diseases, gynaecological problems and allergies.
