Plenty of medieval treasures survive such as the Temple of Apollo, dating from around 565 BC, probably the oldest Greek temple in Sicily.
Siracusa has a Greek amphitheatre, which can accommodate up to 15,000 people and a Roman amphitheatre whose external diameter is surpassed only by the Colosseum in Rome and the Arena in Verona.
For more leisurely pursuits there are good beaches nearby, and no shortage of good restaurants in Siracusa.
