Self-catering apartments in Reykjavik: The world’s northernmost capital, Reykjavik, European City of Culture in the year 2000, has is modern, forward-looking city complemented by its proximity to stunning vistas and the unusual daylight hours.
Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. On a clear day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier can be seen shimmering on the horizon, while in the summer, you can sit by the harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip below the horizon before it rises up again almost straight away.
The summer tourist season is from late May to early September. During the first half of this period the sun stays above the horizon for almost 24 hours and creates an interplay of light and shadows on mountains, lava fields and glaciers. The maximum temperature then is only as high as the low teens.
The city is famed for its nightlife with hundreds of pubs and clubs.
One of the delights of a visit to Reykjavik is bathing in one of the many thermal pools, filled with geothermally heated water, which are found in every district of the city.
There are lots of footpaths, including routes along much of the Reykjavik coastline and through parks and other open areas. Public transport is good, with a network of buses.
