Turin or Turino is a major industrial city in north-western Italy, the capital of the Piedmont region and is located mainly on the west bank of the Po River. Turin is well known as the home of the Shroud of Turin and hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics. Turin is the birth place of solid chocolate and has plenty to offer chocoholics.

There is also much to see culturally. The best known building of the city is the Mole Antonelliana, which houses the National Cinema Museum. The Palatine Towers are among the best preserved Roman remains in northern Italy. The Cathedral of St John the Baptist houses the Shroud of Turin, an old linen cloth with an imprint of a man, which is believed by many to be the cloth that covered Jesus in his grave. The Museo Egizio has the most important collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world after the Cairo Museum.

Turin has a thriving nightlife with the Murazzi are the centre. There are many different venues on the banks of the river, chic, trendy or alternative. Valentino park is full of restaurants, discos, dance halls and so-called "landing-stages”. The Quadrilatero Romano, the oldest part of the city, is today one of its trendiest quarters.

As ever in Italy the local cuisine has much to offer: anchovies in green sauce, spicy tomini cheese, agnolotti with gravy, bollito, fritto misto and bagna caoda and the local wines are excellent.

Shops are plentiful in Turin. They are closed on Monday morning, Sunday and public holidays. During working days they are open from 9am to 12.30pm and from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.
