An almost entirely mountainous region, the Province of Trento is located in the Dolomite mountain range, which is part of the Alps. The mountains are split by a main valley running through the centre called the Valle dell'Adige (Adige Valley). Historically the valley was an important route connecting Italy with northern Europe, with the consequence that the valley contains the principal towns of the region. Among other important valleys are Val di Non, known for its apple production, Val di Sole and Val Giudicarie.
