If you're looking for a holiday where you can combine sunshine, beaches, outdoor activities and culture, then you might be looking for a holiday in Tenerife. Apartments here range from seaside flats with easy beach access to cottages tucked into the island's rugged interior. You're sure to find a suitable apartment, no matter which area of Tenerife appeals to you.

Head south to resorts like Playa de las Américas, Costa Adéje, Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes for the best beaches and water sports on Tenerife. Apartments in this area put you within easy walking distance to the shore and to other area attractions. One golden beach after another lines the coast, while in town shops, bars, discos and dance clubs abound, with the night-time offerings ranging from family-friendly karaoke joints to Ibiza-style clubs. Also, the shopping here is some of the best you'll find in Tenerife. An apartment in one of these southern resorts is great for anyone looking for both easy beach access and a lively atmosphere.

Santa Cruz, the island's capital and largest city, is another great area to visit. Some of the best restaurants on the island as well as varied options for shopping and cultural activities are found in this busy city. Other favourite areas include northern resort towns like Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife's first large tourism centre, and Garachico, whose volcanic pools make for a unique swimming experience. Inland, head to historic La Orotava and La Laguna, two of the prettiest and most traditional spots on the island.

Also be sure to visit the Teide National Park in central Tenerife. Home to Spain's tallest peak, this volcanic wonderland is a great place for hiking and for learning about the Tenerife's often violent volcanic history.

Two airports serve Tenerife, Tenerife Sur in the south, and the smaller Tenerife Norte in the north. Flying time from the UK is about four hours, and there are direct flights from numerous UK airports.

Once on the island, you'll need to hire a car if you really want to get out and explore. If you plan to make a beeline for a resort like Playa de las Américas or Los Cristianos, you might be better off taking a bus (there is regular service from both airports) as taxis are expensive and having a car in the resorts themselves is usually unnecessary.

If you plan to travel to other Canary Islands, think about taking a ferry. Ferries here are comfortable and inexpensive, and give you great Atlantic views as well. You can also travel with the Canary Island's airline, Binter Canarias.

Tenerife is, after all, an island, and it should be no surprise that water and beach activities are the main draw here. In resort towns like Playa de las Américas, Los Gigantes or El Médano, you'll have your pick of water sports. Sailing is popular, as is scuba diving; head to your local puerto deportivo (recreation port) to find information about outfitters and guides. Along the island's western coast, especially around Los Gigantes, whale- and dolphin-watching excursions are popular. On the southern and eastern coast, in resort towns like El Médano, windsurfing, kit surfing and traditional surfing attract crowds. In all resorts, you'll find beach chairs and plenty of sunshine if all you're after is a tan.

On dry land, head to the Teide National Park, where Spain's tallest peak, the Pico del Teide, resides. A cable car whisks you up to the 3718m summit in just eight minutes, though those with more stamina can take the hard way up - walking. Other recommended walks in Tenerife's best-known park include the Roques de García route and the 16km Las Siete Cañadas trail. Cycling is not permitted in the park itself, but other areas of Tenerife are ideal for exploring on two wheels, and you'll find numerous bike-rental companies in the resort towns.

Golf is also big in Tenerife, and the year-round warm weather means that this is one of the few places where golf is a winter sport. Most courses are in the south of the island, around Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje.

Kid-friendly activities about on Tenerife as well. There's no shortage of fun theme parks and water parks. Learn about the banana industry at Bananera El Guanche in Puerto de la Cruz, or about parrots in Loro Parque, also in Puerto de la Cruz. In southern Tenerife, take the little ones to Skypark Waterpark or Aquapark Tenerife to splash around, or to Karting Klub Tenerife to race around like mini Formula One drivers.
