A fishing port built on the grounds of the ancient city Lato pros Kamara, Agios Nikolaos looks over a marine lake that borders Crete's largest bay, Merabello.
A temperate, marine climate, Crete is hot and dry in the summer and mild in the winter. Snow can be seen in winter on the higher mountain slopes.
The island's main international airport is Heraklion. The lesser known Chania airport also accepts international flights. By sea, a ferry comes from Piraeus 5 times a week. There is also a ferry that goes to Sitia, Karpathos and Rhodes twice a week.
