A varied region, England's North West offers both beautiful scenery, especially around the Lake District, as well as culture, history and lively cities.

Liverpool is one of the region's most important cities and is home to once-splendid Victorian buildings and two cathedrals (one Catholic and one Anglican). The Albert Dock, proof of the historical importance of seafaring here, is lined with restaurants and shops and is worth a stop. Also visit museums like the Western Approaches Museum and the Tate Gallery, an extension of London's Tate Gallery.

Manchester, which like Liverpool was long one of England's main industrial centres, is a busy place with a vibrant nightlife and large student population. Of course the local football team is a draw too, and don't miss a stroll around the city's parks.

Out in the countryside, North West England boasts pretty historic towns like Chester in the south and Carlisle in the north. The Lake District, in the far northwest, is considered one of the loveliest areas in England and is a walkers' paradise. Some 14 million people visit each year, and many of them head out to the web of trails that meander around the lakes and the mountains nearby.

Spring, summer and early autumn are the most popular times of year to visit North West England, which is one of the country's coolest and dampest areas. The Lake District generally wins the prize as England's all-round wettest area (the reason it's also one of the most beautiful), but if you dress for drizzle you can visit any time of the year. Keep in mind the fact that some mountain roads may be impassible in winter.

Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool each have an airport, and London is just an hour away by air. It's also easy to get here by train. Several rail lines connect the region with the rest of Britain. Towns in the region are well-connected by train, bus lines and major highways.

Hiking in and around the Lake District national park is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the region. The dramatic Cumbrian Mountains form the backdrop of a tranquil area popular with walkers and hikers. In summer, many say it's too popular; June through August the park is generally packed, especially on weekends.

Cycling, boating and fishing are also popular around the lakes.

Literary fans will have fun visiting Wordsworth's family home in Cockermouth and the Wordsworth museum in Ambleside. Throughout the region, they'll find references to former resident Beatrix Potter and her beloved children's characters.

Historical buffs will enjoy strolls around old towns like Carlisle, where the 11th-century Carlisle Castle is perched above the River Eden, and Chester, with a sandstone Roman wall and pretty Victorian buildings. Don't miss a visit to Hadrian's Wall (122 AD), one of the most important historical sites in Britain.

For museums and galleries Manchester and Liverpool can't be beaten, though one of the latter's most popular activities is a Beatles tour around town.
