The Douro river, the longest in northern Portugal, winds its way past mountains and cliffs until it reaches the Atlantic near the city of Porto where pleasure boats ply the waters. Between Mes?o Frio and Pinh?o the valley sides are lined with terraced vineyards that produce the famous Port wine.
Signs of prehistoric men are seen in the ancient cave paintings in Vila Nova de Foz C?a while elsewhere medieval castles and convents or Romanesque little churches dot the landscape.
History, too, is evoked by the manor houses, such as the Baroque mansion at Mateus, near Vila Real, or in the great 17th century sanctuaries, such as Nossa Senhora dos Rem?dios in Lamego.
In the Montanhas region one finds the green fields of the Douro, the continuation of the central mountain range and wonderful historic villages where time seems to have stopped, such as Almeida, Sortelha, Monsanto, Belmonte, Pi?d?o, and Idanha-a-Velha.
